Cow's Milk
Milk is one of the most common articles
of food throughout the world. It occupies a unique position in
the maintenance of health and in the healing of disease. It is
considered "nature's most nearly perfect food"143.
The milk of animals has been used by mankind from time
immemorial. In ancient times, Ayurvedacharyas have described
eight types of milk:
These are milk from cow, buffalo, goat,
camel, woman, sheep, elephant and donkey.
Among all the types of milk, cow's milk is
considered to be the best. It is very
good for infants, toddlers and aged people.
According to modem science also, milk is
regarded as a complete food. It
contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, all the known
vitamins, various minerals and all the food ingredients
considered essential for sustaining life and maintaining
health 143.
Properties:
Milk
is sweet in taste, vipaka is also sweet. It is rejuvenating,
cold and heavy and is an alleviator of vata and pitta.
Beneficial Effects :
Milk
is rejuvenating and nourishing, promotes breast growth,
increases strength and intellect, is a mild carminative and
alleviates vata and pitta. It is useful in shwas (dyspnoea),
kas (cough), atipyas (excessive thirst), bhukh (hunger),
jeemajwar (chronic fever), mutrakruchha (urinary tract infection) and raktapitta
(haematuria).
